Four-stroke engine

125 cc air-cooled DOHC single in section through the cylinder and valve axes

Turning heat into rotation through a four-phase cycle

An Otto cycle in a finned cylinder. The cams, turning at half crank speed, open each valve by the lift their profile gives; a computed cycle at 6000 rpm (CR 9.2, 58 bar peak) sets the gas, which changes from fresh charge to a flame growing from the plug to burned gas. The P–V diagram traces the loop as the crank turns, with the pumping loop visible on its log scale.

Porter governor

Porter flyball governor with bevel drive, bell crank and double-beat steam throttle valve, in axial section

Negative-feedback proportional control: the speed sets the opening, so more load is carried at a lower speed (droop)

Two iron balls on equal arms lift a weighted sleeve as the spindle speeds up, and the sleeve shuts a balanced double-beat valve through a bell crank. When the load steps up the engine slows, the balls drop, the valve opens, and the engine settles at a new, slightly lower speed. That offset is the droop of a proportional controller, plotted against the governor's own characteristic.

Lever escapement

Swiss lever watch escapement in plan, with a section through the balance staff and its jewel bearings

Turning stored energy into equal ticks: a clock-driven scheduler, a rate-limited event loop

A balance and hairspring swing at 4 Hz whatever the mainspring does; the escapement only lets the train move when the balance says so. Each beat the fork unlocks a stone, the club tooth pushes the stone and the fork pushes the impulse jewel, then the tooth drops onto the other stone and locks, so the escape wheel advances one tooth every two beats. The diagram marks every impulse on the balance's swing.

Force multiplication by area ratio (Pascal's principle)

Pascal's principle in a cast base. Each 25 mm stroke of the Ø12 plunger pushes 2.83 cm³ of oil past the delivery ball and lifts the Ø32 ram 3.52 mm, so 138 N on the handle holds 1.5 t. Token bucket rate limiting (API rate limits)

The water is the tokens. A fixed Ø3.5 jet at mains pressure refills at 0.146 L/s whatever the level, which is a constant token rate, and the float shuts it at capacity. Each pull of the knob takes one 1.5 L dose; below one token the dose float rests on its stop and the pull is refused, and the overflow tube is the hard cap if the float is held down.

Five-pin euro-profile half cylinder (DIN 18252, 30/10) and its key in longitudinal section

Authentication by matching a secret: every factor must match (AND)

Each key pin is cut for one depth of the key, so the right key lifts every crown exactly to the shear line between plug and body. The key is cut in 0.5 mm steps; a key one cut wrong leaves pin 3 a millimetre low, its driver straddles the line and the plug will not turn. Only when all five gaps sit on the line does the plug, and its cam, turn.

B16 miniature circuit breaker (EN 60898-1) cut on its centre plane

Wax thermostat

Automotive wax-pellet coolant thermostat (opens at 88 °C) in section, in its housing between engine and radiator

A setpoint controller with no electronics: negative feedback through melting wax

Paraffin in a brass cup gains 12 % in volume as it melts, squeezes a rubber sleeve and pushes the pin against the bridge, so the cup moves down: the valve opens to the radiator and the bypass disc shuts. The engine's heat balance closes the loop, and the coolant settles a little above 88 °C, higher under load. Wax freezes 2 K below where it melts, so the lift–temperature diagram traces a hysteresis loop.

Relief valve

DN25 spring-loaded safety relief valve in axial section

A spring-set threshold with hysteresis: pop open, blow down, reseat

The spring's preload over the seat area sets the opening pressure. Once the disc cracks open, gas fills the huddling chamber and acts on a larger area, so the valve pops to high lift and stays open until the pressure has fallen about 10 %, then snaps shut. Rear-axle open bevel-gear differential in plan section, with the car in a turn

Splitting one input between two outputs that may run at different speeds: load balancing

The crown wheel turns the carrier, and the carrier always turns at the mean of the two wheels. The spider gears stay still on their pin when the car runs straight and spin only when the wheels differ, in a turn or with one wheel on ice. Because a spider pushes equally on both side gears, the torque splits equally, so the wheel on ice sets what both wheels get.

Monotube gas-charged automotive damper (de Carbon type) in axial section

Smoothing a noisy input: the suspension as a low-pass filter

A quarter car drives over a speed hump on a rough road. The oil is forced through the piston ports and bends the shim stacks, which is why the force–velocity curve is steep at low speed and flattens past the knee; the nitrogen behind the floating piston takes up the rod's volume and keeps the oil from cavitating. With the valves bypassed the body keeps bouncing, so the two passes on the body chart show what the damper filters out.

ISO 2858 end-suction water pump 50-32-160 with its discharge globe valve, cut through the shaft and through the volute

Converting rotation into pressure, and the operating point where supply meets demand

The impeller flings water outwards and the volute turns its speed into pressure, so the stipple thickens from the suction eye to the discharge. The affinity laws scale the pump curve with speed, the globe valve steepens the system curve as it throttles, and the duty point sits where the two cross; below 1674 rpm the pump cannot lift the 12 m static head and nothing flows.

Positive displacement: a conveyor of fixed-size batches

Two involute gears carry oil round the outside of the bore in sealed tooth spaces, 24 batches of 0.33 cm³ per revolution, and the mesh squeezes them out at the outlet. Flow is displacement × speed less a laminar leak that grows with pressure, so the volumetric efficiency falls as pressure rises, and falls further at low speed. Each space's pressure builds over the last two pitches before the outlet.

Bernoulli's principle: one flow metering another

Air speeding through the venturi throat loses ½ρv² of pressure, and because the float bowl is vented that depression lifts petrol through the main jet, so fuel follows air in proportion. Below the threshold the pilot circuit takes over through the idle and progression ports; the float drops as the jets draw, and its needle opens to refill the bowl.

6 L stovetop pressure cooker (EN 12778) in axial section

Raising the boiling point with pressure; a safety interlock that cannot open while the resource is in use

Water boils where its vapour pressure meets the pressure above it, so a 62 g weight on a Ø3 bore holds 0.86 bar and the water boils at 118 °C instead of 100. The lock pin rises at 3 kPa, seals its own vent and blocks the lid's slide, so the lid cannot be turned while the pot is pressurised. The operating point climbs the saturation curve, sits on the weight while the steam vents, and slides back down when the hob goes off.

A small signal controlling a big flow: servo amplification through a pilot

A 10 W coil lifts an 11 mm plunger only 3.2 mm, and that opens a 1.6 mm pilot. The pilot drains the chamber above the diaphragm faster than the 0.8 mm bleed refills it, so water pressure lifts the diaphragm after the plunger and 35 L/min flows. Switched off, the bleed lets the diaphragm down slowly enough (0.72 s) that the surge in the pipe stays below 1 bar.

Hydraulic force transmission; a master–replica pair where one piston writes and the other follows
